It's nice to imagine a graphic and sound environment that is as comprehensive as the human senses, and thus tells you everything you need to know about the world around you. But it's not reality. If there are two people standing behind me, I can sense in general when they move away, or if they stand still. I can do this because I can hear sounds and tell what side they're on, and whether it's the heavy steps of a big man, or the light steps of a child, etc.

If one of them starts casting a spell, I can tell where it's coming from. If one person is an athlete and another is a couch potatoe, I can tell that too.

Asking the programmers to make the graphics rich enough to display all of that is wrong. Too time consuming, and not enough value. Plus, it would drag your computer to its knees.

The heart and soul of a combat engine and environment that differentiates between players of various skills is information. I need to know what's going on to make rational decisions. And poor attempts at graphics to convey all of that information isn't the way to go.

I understand the desire to create a computer simulation that is really as involving as the real world, and works along the same line. But it's not practical. I would FAR rather create a fun and strategic system that makes use of tools like text details on actions than I would want to suffer through attempts at more complex methods that are bound to fail.

Lots of people constantly make comments about the good old days of pen and paper, and how imagination was enough for the RPG environment. We've moved far beyond that. But let's not sacrifice playability to those kinds of features. That's one of the many mistakes that the other games have made.

If we could all focus on the core issues of making a game fun and engaging rather than on the little nice things like waving, I (for one) would be much happier.

Months from now when SB is nearing release, I'll be one ticked off fool if combat sucks, but I can wave and sit down graphically instead of through emotes.

Remember that every non-core suggestion we make that gets listened to takes bandwidth AWAY from (IMO) the more critical issues of playability.
