the world has resource limitations...

I like your point in all of this. I just want to make sure that first things come first.

If I stand you up, and put one person behind to your left, and one person behind to your right, and then have one of them clap, you can tell me which on clapped. I guarantee it.

If one is wearing bronze boots and another is wearing deer-hide mocasins, and one walks away while the other stays... I bet you can tell me who walked away.

If I put two guys in front of you and one is a high-school football player (low skill) and another is a pro football player (high skill) and ask you which one is the pro, I bet you could tell me.

The big stuff (someone in front of you casting a spell) is easy to put into a game on a graphical basis. The subtler perceptions that you have in real life are MUCH harder. And yet it's the subtle difference - seeing it, understanding it and reacting to it - that draws the line between a good player and poor one.

Can you provide those kind of rich sense-clues in a game? Maybe. Is it worth everything in might take to do that? Maybe. Is it worth it if a lot of time is spent doing that instead of creating a deep combat system that requires brains to operate? No. No way. Not close. Not a chance.

First things first. But then I'm all for second things second... as long as they're just that. Second.

Regards,
Hedron
