by Hedron 8/13/99 3:14:00 PM I've seen alot of specific questions about game interface and mechanics. While those questions are interesting, they're not at the heart of what will make or break this game (atleast for me). What I'm REALLY interested in is what degree of human skill it will take to triumph in combat within this game engine. One of the things that many persistent-world game manufacturers miss is that while winning and losing power in a game environment is a compelling force to get people to play, it's only a short-term stimulus. The only long-term reason to play a game, and the only thing that truly captivates people is the development of their own skills in playing. Games like UO and EQ demand a time committment to better your character, but they do not demand a brain committment beyond the most basic level. And when it comes to PVP the options are so limited that the closest analogy is that it's like playing tic-tac-toe. Now a TRUE evaluation of Shadowbane's ability to incorporate skill into combat would only be possible at the game-play level. And I don't expect to be able to get a full enough feel for the game via the boards to judge that in any way. BUT, what I would like to get from the designers is some kind of a feel for their mind-set on these issues. What exactly are you doing (if anything) to make sure that combat in your game allows the smarter better player to win over the luckier player, or the player who pours more brianless time into the game? In the true home of my guild (Neverwinter Nights the ORIGINAL), combat was very strategic. The talented fighter ALWAYS beat the newbie no matter how the stats were set. Hell, a good fighter could win a 2on1 against a couple of bad fighters. If this game can't have battles decided on wits, strategy, tactics, etc., but is instead merely a highly competitive slug-fest... well then --- yawn. Can the Wolfpack people jump in here and tell us whether their designing a slug-fest game, or a strategic game? What's your philosophy? Hedron The False Prophet http://www.kaaos.com Follow Ups:
